The July-September 2010 issue of the ISASI Forum recently reprinted the article, Helicopter EMS Operations-at what cost?. Christine Negroni and Dr. Patrick Vellette do a nice job outlining additional recommendations to improve EMS safety. Much of the statistical information cited utilized ASRS data, which is often subjective. Another safety initiative that can provide objective flight data and increased visibility into EMS operations are robust Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring (HFDM) programs. Historically, FDM programs were cost prohibitive, while today, with the introduction of new technologies, these programs can be implemented and operated at several orders of magnitude lower than then the airline model.
Would HFDM increase safety for the EMS operator?
