Stuart “Kipp” Lau is the Vice President/Flight Data Monitoring Services for CAPACG, LLC in Daytona Beach, Florida. His primary focus is centered on the development and implementation of safety programs such as Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA). His professional aviation career spans over 25-years. As a current Safety and Accident Investigation Committee member and FOQA Monitoring Team member for a major international freight airline (UPS), his vision is to bring data analysis to the next level to enhance flight safety by supporting flight operations, training and maintenance programs.
Currently, Stuart is a core member of the Joint Helicopter Safety Implementation Team – an element of the International Helicopter Safety Team (www.ihst.org) – and heads the joint industry/government effort to implement Flight Data Monitoring programs, worldwide. In the same vein, Stuart was elected to the Steering Group for the Global Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring Committee – as the IHST Liaison.
In 1996, Stuart began writing articles in various industry trade publications on a number of flight safety and operational issues. Currently, he serves as a consultant and editorial advisory board member for his airline and union’s in-house flight safety and operations magazines. Stuart has over 60-articles published in various national magazines and regional newspapers. Most importantly, as an aviation journalist, he is uniquely qualified to determine the most effective media to communicate FOQA-derived safety information to the stakeholders.
With over 14,000 hours of flight time, Stuart has flown a variety of aircraft in many different operations and is type-rated in the Boeing 747-400, 747, 767, 757, CL-65 and SF-340. Currently, he is employed by a major international freight airline and has flown as a crewmember on the Boeing 727, Douglas DC-8 and Boeing 747 and 757/767. In addition to flying airliners, Stuart maintains currency in general aviation aircraft.
In 2009, Stuart was recognized with the Vision 21 Award as distinguished alumni of Kent State University – the annual award represents 21 former students who’ve made an impact on their industry.
